Balikpapan is widely recognised as being one of the easiest cities to live in Indonesia. As part of the Earth Hour City Challenge, the city of Balikpapan was recognized as Indonesia’s Most Loveable City in 2015. Large parks are located throughout the city, and there is a botanical garden to rival Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, and a multitude of malls cater to consumers.
