Lombok is an Indonesian island east of Bali and west of Sumbawa, part of the Lesser Sunda Island chain. It’s known for beaches and surfing spots, particularly at Kuta and Banko Banko (in south Lombok). The motor-vehicle-free Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno), off Lombok’s west coast, offer more beaches, reefs for diving and snorkeling, and a sea turtle hatchery.
With divine beaches, the majestic Mt Rinjani and spectacular marine life to discover, the island of Lombok has no shortage of attractions both in and out of the water. It’s little wonder then that Lombok is the most popular destination in West Nusa Tenggara. Challenge yourself with a trek up steep volcanic peaks. Hire a bike and cycle through lush evergreen rice paddies. Whichever way you choose to spend your time you won’t be disappointed with the spectacular natural beauty on offer in Lombok.

What Makes Lombok Unique?
- The Gili Islands: The Gilis are a small string of islands off of Lombok’s coast. They are very popular for scuba diving and snorkeling as well as relaxing, swimming and partying. Gili Trawangan is famed among backpackers for its extensive, 24-hour party scene, which many describe as rivaling Thailand’s iconic full moon parties. Gili Meno and Gili Air are smaller and more laid back than Gili T. Both have a relatively undiscovered appeal, as they enjoy far fewer visitors than their larger neighbor. Visitors to Gili Meno can see turtles being released into the sea nearby the island’s turtle hatchery!
- Rinjani Mountain: Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, dominates Lombok’s topography, and is a magnet for trekkers. Winding up its jungle-clad slopes (which takes a few days) reveals an ever-changing succession of tropical vistas. Once on the summit, the sight of jaw-dropping sunrises and volcanic calderas, as well as a sense of conquering the entire island, are rewards for the weary.
- Taliwang chicken is the typical food of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara-basedchicken spices served with a dried red chili, onion, garlic, red tomatoes, friedshrimp, kencur, Java sugar, and salt. Usually served with traditional foods such as Plecing Lombok.
