Why Teach English as a Foreign Language
Teaching English as a foreign language is one of the most rewarding jobs there is. As a teacher, you can get instant feedback on the work that you have done. When you teach a new word, correct a sentence or help someone with their pronunciation, you can see the results immediately. There’s no better feeling than seeing a group of your students speak English to each other and have fun in class.
TEFL teachers not only help people to learn English, but they also help them have fun in the process. Learning a language requires speaking. Fun games, activities, team tasks and real situations not only get students speaking, but they also make learning interesting and enjoyable. As a teacher, you can create games and activities that both you and your students enjoy and have fun at work making a difference.
What does a TEFL Teacher Do?
As a teacher, your day will vary depending on the type of teaching that you decide to do. You can specialise in teaching kids and teens, teaching adults or even teaching English online. For kids and teens, as well as adults teachers, most of your time will be spent in class, guiding students through the three key elements of English language learning. EF likes to refer to these three elements as learn, try and apply.
In the learning phase, teachers introduce new vocabulary and sentence structures, through games and activities. In the try phase, students will practice as teachers monitor their use and help guide and correct errors. In the practice phase, teachers organise activities for the students to use the language naturally. Using the latest methodologies and best practices, teaching English as a foreign language requires hands-on practical learning and teaching.
