Teaching English in China with no experience? It sounds impossible, doesn't it? Well, it's not. It's totally possible to get a teaching job in China without any prior experience.

Every single year thousands of English speakers of all ages get English teaching jobs in China without experience. In fact, the majority of new English teachers in China far outweigh those with years of teaching experience under their belts.

What's more, those inexperienced teachers in China (more often than not) have no university degree in education, and some don't have an English university background. So what gives?

ENGLISH LANGUAGE HUB

China is a hub for new English teachers. It's the perfect place to get your foot in the door if you're considering a future in teaching or if you want a break from your current situation.

China is the most populated country in the world. And with its growing power and economy, knowing English has never been more important. Everyone and anyone who wants to secure a better job or future and has the means to pay for English language lessons in China does so. Business people, government officials, university graduates, high school kids, and even children as young as two years old are being taught English by both experienced and inexperienced English teachers in China.

THERE IS DEMAND FOR NEW TEACHERS

There's such a demand for English teachers, that there aren't enough experienced teachers to fill the gaps. This means that companies are keen to hire enthusiastic new teachers who are quick learners and are willing to train. Inexperienced teachers would take TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) training and certification before they start.

English speakers with no prior background in English language teaching are employed every day in China. All you need is:

  • A passport from either Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K. or the U.S.A

  • A bachelor's degree in absolutely any subject. A history degree? No problem! A college degree in eco-tourism? Yes!

  • A criminal background check and medical test are also required.

These are the only things you need to secure yourself a job as an inexperienced English teacher in China. Obviously, your passion for learning, education and the English language will be a bonus. In fact, many companies and schools prefer hiring teachers with little or no experience. New teachers are often the people who make the best teachers – they have fresh ideas and a willingness to learn, which are two key traits that all employers look for in a new recruit.

AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE MISSED

In short, there are many job opportunities for inexperienced teachers in China. If this is something you've been thinking of, why not take the risk and try something new? China is an amazing country with a very long history. It makes for a great travel experience if nothing else. The people are warm and hospitable, and this is one country in the world where teachers, especially foreign English language teachers are highly valued.

Don't let your inexperience stand in the way of a possible new career. Teaching is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, and even if you will be teaching English in China without any experience, you'll still be on a decent salary. You never know, you may just grow to love it!
