Life at English First
At EF we are on a mission. Our ambition is to open the world through education. We want to connect people from around the world using language, breaking down the barriers that slow down how we communicate and come together. At the heart of this mission are our teachers. As a teacher, we hope you can join us in bringing people together, and you are instrumental our success. You will spend your days, teaching second language learners about language. You will also share your culture with students and colleagues and even share in theirs.
Life as an English teacher at EF is both challenging and rewarding. If you share our spirit of sharing, learning and exploring, then we would love to welcome you to the family.
The first thing everyone notices when they join EF English First is our company culture. From our HQ in Shanghai to our schools around the country, EFer’s seem to share the same love for fun, adventure and teaching. Our schools and offices have been specifically designed to make the working environment relaxed and open, and that’s the way our teams work.
From the moment you join us, you will be introduced to your coworkers who have already walked in your shoes and experienced life as a newbie. They will be able to answer questions and help you settle in. The team dynamic makes sharing new ideas with your colleagues and managers very easy. We love to embrace an entrepreneurial spirit! That means if you want to try something new, speak to your manager or supervisor and see how you can make it happen.
Although you may be teaching in the classroom alone, it doesn’t mean you’re not a valuable member of a larger team. We’re very keen on knowledge sharing and creating an environment where people love to work.
As part of the team, you will have weekly CPD (Continuous Professional Development) sessions, you will help your colleagues out, and they will help you out. From time to time, EF will even sponsor a team building activity. You can go and grab some food and drinks together, try some cool activities and bond with your new work mates.
Training And Development at EF
Training and development is a big part of being an EF teacher. As our mission is to open up the world through education, we like to share this with everyone. In your first few weeks, you will go through onboarding training. This will be an introduction to teaching local learners, followed by a refresher on teaching methodologies that you covered in your TEFL course.
Training doesn’t stop there though. You will have weekly CPD (continual professional development) sessions in your centre, and you can even enrol in our free teacher training courses, or enrol in a sponsored internationally recognised teaching qualification.
Balancing Life and Work
As a teacher, you will teach regular schedules for 5 consecutive days each week. This means that you can get into a regular schedule and plan exciting trips on your days off, relax or pursue any hobbies and interests.
Although most teachers work weekends, you will soon find that this isn’t too much of an issue. You will find that your other friends and colleagues who are also teachers will share similar days off. You can visit the same places you would at the weekends but without the crowds.
TRAVEL AND EVENTS
In 2016, EF English First held over 221 teacher events for our English teachers across China. Many of these teacher events were free or required a small contribution. 3,924 teachers attended these events, with more and more being planned every year.
As a teacher at EF, you will also get the opportunity to attend these events. They are run by our events team and led by teachers. In the past, teachers have had foot massages, learnt how to cook Chinese food, attended plays, visited museums and even travelled around the country on one of the quarterly teacher trips. While you are teaching with EF, you are encouraged to join and get to know other teachers from your city.
If you’re joining us in China, the chances are you may be interested in picking up some Chinese. Although you can get by using English and the occasional gesture, many of our teachers find that learning some Chinese makes things a little bit easier.
As soon as you accept a teaching position with us, you can start learning straight away. You will be given access to our online learning platform, Chinese Town. You can go ahead and book your first class and continue with us for as long as you are with EF. Chinese classes are held for all levels from beginner to advanced, and you can even take face-to-face classes when you arrive.
